The Politics of Hate (Kicked)
This was first published on March 29, 2010 by Dave. I am kicking it to the top again because of how prescient it is. I’d also compare this post to this current Michelle Malkin post – Malkin points to “Progressive Hate”, but the people she points to are minor criminals who happen to support a Political Party. The right wing hate machine (of which she is a major part) has become increasingly violent as a direct result of their political stance.

UPDATE: Wow, this really got those Tea Baggers’ panties in a bunch. Must have touched a nerve. In an effort to prove me wrong, that the right wing does not use the rhetoric of hate, I, your resident disabled combat vet of two tours was called a “coward” and a douchebag and maybe a couple of other names. And with all the smugness only a true righty can attain I have been berated publicly and informed that the nude protesters during Bush the Lesser’s administration rise to the level of what we have seen lately from Johhny Right – no hate there. I even tried to tell them “Hey remember that Bush/Hitler ad someone tried to submit to MoveOn.org and MoveOn immediately pulled it? They didn’t run it; they knew it was wrong.” All in all, I truly felt the warmth and a genuine sense of reaching out and trying to help me to understand their better and more correct point of view. <— You can’t see it, but that sentence literally oozes with sarcasm. I like to put the updates right up front. Now, on to the post:
I’m getting overwhelmed here. I began research and collecting data about the right wing use of the politics of fear and hate. There are too many examples – waaaay too many for me to include in this piece. I’m having trouble being clear and concise because they all seem so relevant to me, and because I don’t want anyone to think that I, or anyone else, have happened upon a few chance items.
For you righties out there reading this right now, I know what you’re thinking already. You’re thinking that you could come up with a list of liberals being violent and using scare tactics too. Well, you could. The difference would be that yours would truly be isolated instances, often by some lone wolf nut job. You could go the anti-war protests during Bush the Lesser’s administration. I’d stay away from the Viet Nam protests, however, as I’d have to remind you of Kent State and other instances of police brutality toward peaceful protesters. Don’t even think about the Civil Rights protesters, it will only hurt your argument.
As several readers pointed out, I mistakenly posted a picture that I understood to be Nancy Pelosi being hanged in effigy was actually a picture of Sarah Palin being hanged in effigy. My bad. However, as they would like to believe, it does not discredit my entire point. And, case in point, I've replaced it with this, the Tea Party founder proudly displaying his mindset and his spelling skills.
The right, now… The right, on the other hand, is a different story. At least, the new right – the right represented by the Tea Party, talk radio and Faux News. This new right has courted the barbarians at the gate in order to garner votes. The new right wooed the ultra-conservative to win elections based on abortion rather than on economics and policy because they were faring so poorly in those areas. The conservative lies about supply sided economic models and trickle down theories haven’t changed, but just a few decades ago weren’t winning over enough voters. Most people saw that it was big business and big finance that really benefited from those policies. And so, the right invited the barbarians to enter the gates, and now the barbarians have taken over. Any moderate republican still standing sees the writing on the wall and either gets with the new program or stands by his principles and is voted out of office.
Those who use the tool of fear and the rhetoric of violence are not fringers or extremists. They are leading the charge, and most republicans are surging along in their wake. They are political leaders like Texas Republican Randy Neugebauer, Sarah Palin and GOP chair Michael Steele. They are community activists like Mike Vanderboegh, the former leader of the Alabama Constitutional Militia, unhappy with the Health Care vote suggested to his followers around the country to throw bricks through the windows of Democrats’ offices. The following day, bricks being thrown through windows were reported across the country. They are Tea Party organizers like President and Founder Dale Robertson who arrived at one Tea Party rally with a sign with the word “Niggar [sic]” emblazoned across it. They are talk radio and television personalities like Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, Fred Thompson and Michael Savage. They are print journalists like Ann Coulter and Michelle Malkin.
They are not on the fringe. They are the preeminent voices of the party and their voices are loud. Their messages are being heard and some of their followers are taking up the cause.
How often can talk show host Bill O’Reilly call abortion doctor George Tiller “the Baby Killer” before he become criminally liable for a man putting a gun to Tiller’s head and blowing his brains all over the church he was attending? That is the rhetoric of violence and it may not cause violence, but it begins to brew something in the environment – something that bubbles below the surface and affects people and primes them to act in ways they might not otherwise. It is the choice of words used to paint a picture and create an emotion. It is the words used by GOP chair Michael Steele when he talks about people “in the line of fire” and the imagery created by Sarah Palin when she tells voters “Don’t retreat. RELOAD!” and a map on her Facebook page showing vulnerable Democrat congressional seats in rifle crosshairs. It is the mood created by former Senator, presidential candidate and now Faux News

personality Mike Huckabee when he says members of Congress “should be tarred and feathered as the original tea partiers would have done.” And it’s the feeling people sometimes get when they read RedState.com poster Erick Ericson’s article in which he wrote, “At what point do the people … march down to their state legislator’s house, pull him outside, and beat him to a bloody pulp for being an idiot?”
And for some, rhetoric is not enough. Some have made a call to action, such as Rush Limbaugh who advocated a riot at the 2008 Democratic National Convention in Denver.
“This is about chaos. This is why it’s called Operation Chaos! It’s not called Operation Save Hillary. It’s not called Operation Nominate Obama. It’s called Operation Chaos! The dream end… I mean, if people say what’s your exit strategery, the dream end of this is that this keeps up to the convention and that we have a replay of Chicago 1968, with burning cars, protests, fires, literal riots, and all of that. That’s the objective here,” said Limbaugh.
“The (Honduran) coup was what many of you wish would happen here, without the military. If we had any good luck, Honduras would send some people here and help us get our government back.,” he stated on his radio broadcast.
Jim Quinn of “The War Room with Quinn and Rose” said, “You have got to say no to this (Health Care Reform), and if they push this through, you need to riot in the streets. You need to riot in the streets.”
There has always been animosity between political parties in this country and sometimes those feelings have spilled over into violence, but, with the exception of the Civil War, those incidents were few, far between, universally condemned and rarely celebrated. But this is different. There is a fanning of the flames, by some for profit and by others for political gain.
Radical Imams create an environment of hate and violence among their followers by simply preaching and advocating violence. Charles Manson never physically killed anyone – he only told others to. Am I comparing Glenn Beck to Charles Manson? You bet I am, just as he compares President Obama to Hitler, only I think my analogy has more going for it.
I believe that a minority of Americans are buying into this culture of violence, and even fewer would act upon it. However, as 
Glenn Beck warned the progressives, “You know the American Revolution took place with 12 percent of the population? Twelve. Are you telling me there is not 30 percent of this population that – you will have to shoot me in the forehead before I…”
Additionally, there is always the “mob mentality” to take into account. For instance, at a recent Tea Bagger Event in Columbus, Ohio, Republican against health care reform, Chris Reichert, took two dollar bills out of his pocket and yelling, “If you’re looking for a hand-out, you’re on the wrong end of town,” threw them at a Parkinson’s disease victim. Reichert, who at first lied and claimed he did not do such a thing, later admitted he did after the video of the incident was shown on YouTube. Reichert apologized and said he “absolutely snapped”. I believe it. I believe that he acted in a way that he would be too ashamed or frightened to do if not for the mob behind him. And while Reichert’s despicable actions were not physically violent, at some point, as they have in the past, someone else is going to “absolutely snap” and pull out a gun.
Do not believe the claim some on the right are making that this is a campaign to make the Republican Party or the Tea Party look bad – they are doing that on their own. Of late, Beck, Boortz and some other on the right have taken to practically begging their followers not to engage in violence. Well, guys, this is the bed you have made. This is what you have been paid $23 million (in Beck’s case) a year to produce. This is what it looks like.

I’ve divided it into two sections: the first is quotes from prominent conservatives, and the second are recent acts of violence – most perpetrated against Democratic Congress persons.

John Perry wrote: “There is a remote, although gaining, possibility America’s military will intervene as a last resort to resolve the ‘Obama problem.’ Don’t dismiss it as unrealistic.” He added: Military intervention is what Obama’s exponentially accelerating agenda for “fundamental change” toward a Marxist state is inviting upon America. Jim Quinn said, “Our country was built on revolution and it’s about time we took it back. Rep. Gregg Harper (R-MS) joked that he “hunt[s] liberal, tree-hugging Democrats, although it’s a waste of good ammunition.” When asked about the remarks, a spokesman for Harper was unapologetic. “It’s supposed to be fun…It’s having a good time,” he said.
Ann Coulter: “When we were fighting communism, OK, they had mass murderers and gulags, but they were white men and they were sane. Now we´re up against absolutely insane savages.” “Hence it is that at the present time the liberal is the great agitator for the complete destruction of America. Tom Tancredo announces at the Tea Party “convention” that America should have “literacy” tests before citizens should be allowed to vote.
Part 2 – The Result
Rep. Markey, one of the few lawmakers to change her vote from “no” last year to “yes” on Sunday, apparently received at least two separate phone calls on the Saturday before the vote.
According to reports, a caller told a staffer “better hope I don’t run into you in a dark alley with a knife, a club or a gun.”
A different caller also told a staffer something like “better tell your boss that she better be careful when she comes back here to Colorado.”
One vulnerable Democrat in the post-health care reform era is Representative Tom Perriello (D-Va.), whose support for reform has brought him continual criticism. This week, one self-styled “Tea Party organizer” posted what he thought was Perriello’s home address, encouraging people to harass the lawmaker at home. The address ended up being the home of Perriello’s brother’s family,

but the activist, Mike Troxel, took it in stride, saying, “I was a journalism major in college, so I have every reason to believe my research is accurate.” Laugh if you want, but this is precisely how the “journalism” works, circa 2010. This isn’t the first time Perriello critics have struggled with geography: back in December, Tea Partiers got all bent out of shape when they discovered that Perriello’s Charlotteville office wasn’t conveniently located in a way that facilitated their whining.
UPDATE: The call to harass Perriello and the dissemination of the incorrect address has combined to lead to something scary: a propane gas line at Perriello’s brother’s house was cut.

“shocked” and “almost speechless” at the actions of the activists. “I obviously condemn these actions,” he said. “I would hope that people aren’t thinking about doing anything crazy. We just wanted people to get close to the congressman and have their voices heard. Violence is not going to answer anything. I’m a little shocked and amazed.” Yet Coleman also stated that the involvement of the brother and his family of four children was merely “collateral damage”, a statement with chillingly violent intent.
“In the wake of his vote in favor of health care reform legislation, Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Mich.), a strong opponent of abortion rights, has been on the receiving end of a string of extremely hostile and threatening messages, including death threats,” CBS News reports.
“Congressman Stupak, you baby-killing mother fucker… I hope you bleed out your ass, got cancer and die, you mother fucker,” one man says in a message to Stupak.
“There are millions of people across the country who wish you ill,” a woman says in a voicemail, “and all of those thoughts that are projected on you will materialize into something that’s not very good for you.”
“My wife still can’t answer the phone,” Stupak told POLITICO Tuesday. The messages are “full of obscenities if she leaves it plugged in. In my office, we can’t get a phone out. It’s just bombarded.”
In the immediate wake of the passage of health care reform, opponents reacted with dignity and maturity by calling for a fatwa on socialist windowpanes. The call went out
Anti-government Hutatree Militia arrested for consipiracy to kill police officers
from some “militia leader” named Mike Vanderboegh, who said: ““We can break their windows…Break them NOW. And if we do a proper job, if we break the windows of hundreds, thousands, of Democrat party headquarters across this country, we might just wake up enough of them to make defending ourselves at the muzzle of a rifle unnecessary.” The good news is that this is how the local window repair economy got stimulated, by Keynesians. The bad news is that Vanderboegh is telling people that “rifles are being cleaned.”
Some of those rifles are apparently being cleaned so as to threaten the children of legislators, such as Representative Louise Slaughter (D-N.Y.). As WHAM in Rochester, NY reports: “Last Thursday [Slaughter] received a chilling recorded message at her campaign office. ‘Assassinate is the word they used…toward the children of lawmakers who voted yes.’”
Twitter may inevitably blow up the budget related to the Secret Service, since it allows every hothead with anger-management issues and 140 characters to spare to call for President Barack Obama to be killed. On Sunday, some idiot named Solly Forrell became internet famous for tweeting: “ASSASSINATION America, we survived the assassinations of Lincoln and Kennedy. We’ll surely get over a bullet 2 #BarackObama’s head.” He followed that up with “The next #American with a #clear #shot should drop #Obama like a bad habit.” That drew the attention of the Secret Service, naturally. And then some other jagoff named Jay Martin followed suit a day later with these rhetorical gems.
Maybe not today, but very soon! His name is Jay Martin and he has spent the evening making sure everyone on Twitter knows he is 
“dead fucking serious” about wishing death upon Barack Obama. Updated with comment from Martin
Earlier today you met Solly Forrell, the conservative blogger now under investigation by the Secret Service for threatening Obama on Twitter. Well, here’s another Twitter user helping to keep the Secret Service busy with his own death threats. According to his Facebook page, Jay Martin graduated from Vatterott College last year with an IT degree and currently resides in Federal Way, WA. His About Me Page says: “Socially aware, Deep thinker, Artistic, Hip Hop Aficionado, free thinker, Funny Guy.” Oh, and he really, seriously, honestly, wants to kill President Barack Obama. - Fresno, California: “Impeach Osama Obama a.k.a. Hussein.”
- In Columbia, S.C., an elderly man held a large sign which read “Barack Obama supports Abortion, Sodomy, Socialism and The New World Order.”
- At a Washington, DC protest, one man held a sign which read “Stand idly by while some Kenyan tries to destroy America? WAP!! I don’t think so!!! Homey don’t play dat!!!”
Lyndsey Stauble, the executive director of the Sedgwick County Democratic Party in Wichita, KS also spoke about the attacks on her offices. “There’s glass everywhere, a brick took out the whole floor-to-ceiling window and put a gouge in my desk”, she said, noting that the brick had some anti-Obama rhetoric” written on it. Offices in Rochester, NY and Niagara Falls, NY have been the target of brick-related incidents as well; over the weekend, bricks crashed through the windows of both offices, one with a note that said, “Extremism in defense of liberty is no vice” — a quote from Barry Goldwater’s 1964 acceptance speech as the Republican presidential candidate.

PHOENIX (AP) — Authorities say the Tucson, Ariz., congressional office of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was vandalized a few hours after the House vote overhauling the nation’s health care system.
Someone either kicked or shot out a glass door and side window of the office early Monday, but it did not appear that anyone entered the office. Authorities are looking into whether a pellet gun was used.
The source of the attacks can be traced back to Mike Vanderboegh of Pinson, Alabama, a former leader of the Alabama Constitutional Militia who put out a call for modern “Sons of Liberty” to break the windows of Democratic Party offices.
Can we forget the blood-lust at the McCain-Palin rallies, in which crowd participants called Obama a terrorist and a traitor, carried around Obama monkey dolls and called for his death? During the 2008 presidential campaign, then-candidate Obama received more 
threats than any other candidate in recent memory, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center. Moreover, several white supremacists were arrested for plotting to assassinate him or threatening to do so.

in the first place when Lott made those statements Obama was in the Illinois Senate not the US Senate. So even though he didn’t care for Lott’s statements, whether or not Lott stayed……..it was not Obama’s decision to make.
And second, Lott’s statements were not necessarily about race. He was praising a man who thought segregation was a good thing! Look up Lott’s actual words, he did not even mention race.
Reid made a mistake by saying what he did but it was in no way, the same as what Lott said in praising Thurmond.

Smack yourself a bit (because you obviously need a reality check), reconsider that most conservative readers are educated than liberal ones, so are more than familiar with the issues you’re distorting (which you are not familiar with, duh), and maybe change this blog to “how to raise poodles for fun and profit” or “ballroom dancing tips for the bored housewife” something that else that isn’t so obviously over your sophomoric liberal head.

Further, the birthers are also righties (though I’m sure you’ll want to point out that a hillary supporter started it, it too now belongs to the right), liberals do not claim Phelps just because he claims to be a democrat. Eric Cantor and it was soon revealed that Leboon had made some 2,000 videos that contained pseudo-religious incantations with random warnings and threats, including videos that targeted President Obama, Vice President Biden, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid as well as threats against judges, David Duke, and even against the movie “Babe.”
So it seems pretty clear to everyone that Leboon’s myriad of threats were most likely driven by some sort of mental illness … everyone, that is, except the Family Research Council which claims that Leboon’s threat against Cantor is part of a “clear pattern of intimidation that comes from many homosexual activists”:

Most indicted members of militia group are voters

Most of the indicted militia members accused of being anti-government extremists have active voting records, a check with area voter registration offices showed yesterday.
One is a registered Democrat, and the party affiliations of the rest could not be determined.
Jacob J. Ward, 33, of Huron, Ohio, voted as a Democrat in the 2004 and 2008 primary elections. He also voted in 10 other elections since 2000. Party affiliation in Ohio is determined by which party’s ballot they requested in the most recent primary election.
Alleged ringleader David Brian Stone, Sr., 45, of Clayton, Mich., registered in Lenawee County, Michigan, in 1998, and last voted in the 2004 general election.
His, and other Michigan voters’ party affiliations, if any, are not public records because of Michigan’s open primary elections, officials said.

And I do try to call them like I see them. In fact, if you read my post “drill baby drill” you may notice I call Obama out on removing the moritorium on off-shore drilling. He is wrong and I hope this last disaster puts him back on the right course in that regard.
You won’t find any thing in my blog about Bush not being articulate. I will call him out on politics though. I don’t even believe he made stupid decisions. I believe he is very smart, and used that intellect for the benefit of a certain class of individuals rather than for the nation as a whole.
